What engineered wood is

Engineered wood siding is made from wood strands or fibers bonded with resins and treated, then pressed into lap boards, panels and trim with a wood-grain face. It comes primed or pre-finished.

It is lighter than fiber cement and cuts with ordinary woodworking tools. Long boards mean fewer joints on a long wall, which suits newer homes with large plain elevations.

Its weak point is water at cut edges and the bottom of the wall. Cut ends are sealed or painted, boards are kept off roofs, decks and soil by the clearances the manufacturer sets, and the paint is kept up.

Ask the contractor

  • Pre-finished or primed and painted after install?
  • How are cut ends and nail holes sealed?
  • What clearance above grade, roofs and decks?
  • How does it meet existing brick or stone on the front of the house?

Engineered Wood Siding: common questions

Is engineered wood real wood?

It is made from wood fibers or strands with binders and treatments, so it behaves differently from solid boards. It still needs a sound paint film.

Can it be repaired?

Damaged boards can be replaced and painted. The surrounding paint may need a refresh so the repair blends in.

Is it a good match for an addition?

It can be, especially where the main house has painted wood or a lap profile. See the additions page for how new walls are clad.
