The layers behind the siding

House wrap is a water-resistive barrier: a sheet that sheds water that gets past the siding while letting the wall dry. It is lapped like shingles, upper over lower, taped at seams and folded into window and door openings with flashing tape. Done carelessly it can funnel water in instead of out.Insulated siding is vinyl with rigid foam bonded or fitted to the back, shaped to the panel's profile. The foam stiffens the panel so it lies flatter and resists dents, and it adds a layer of insulation over the studs.Foam board under siding is another approach: a continuous layer of rigid foam over the sheathing before the siding goes on. It changes window and door trim depths, so the details need planning.

Which makes sense depends on the wall, the windows and what the house needs. Ask the contractor to explain the trade-offs for your walls rather than picking from a brochure.

Ask about

  • Which house wrap, and how it is taped and lapped at openings
  • Flashing at the head of each window and door
  • How foam thickness affects trim around windows and doors
  • Whether the old sheathing will be checked before wrapping

Insulated Siding & House Wrap: common questions

Does insulated siding replace wall insulation?

No. It adds a thin layer outside the studs. Insulation in the wall cavity is a separate job.

Is house wrap needed with vinyl siding?

Vinyl is not watertight, so a barrier behind it matters. Ask what the contractor installs and how.

Can house wrap go over old siding?

Most contractors remove old siding first so the wrap goes on the sheathing and the wall can be inspected.
