Soffit, fascia and trim with your siding

When the siding is being replaced, the soffit, fascia and trim around it usually come into the same job. Call to talk with an independent siding contractor about the whole exterior.

Why they go together

The soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, the fascia is the board along the eave that the gutter hangs on, and trim boards frame corners, windows and doors. Siding ties into all of them, so replacing siding often exposes tired trim or rotted fascia.

Vented soffit lets air into the attic. If old soffit was solid, a re-side is a chance to restore that airflow; ask the contractor whether the attic is vented at the eaves.

Wood fascia and trim are commonly wrapped in aluminum or replaced with PVC or composite boards. Any rotted wood underneath should come out first, not be wrapped over.

This line connects you for soffit, fascia and trim as part of a siding job. For gutter-only or roof work, ask the contractor whether they do it.

Ask the contractor

  • Is the fascia board sound, or does it need replacing before wrapping?
  • Vented or solid soffit, and is there attic ventilation to match?
  • What trim material and widths around windows and doors?
  • Will gutters come down and go back up, and who does it?

Soffit, Fascia & Trim: common questions

Can soffit and fascia be done without new siding?

Some siding contractors take it on separately. Ask on the call; the line is set up for siding work.

What is the white metal around my windows?

Usually aluminum trim coil bent around wood trim. If it has gaps, water can sit behind it.

Do soffit vents matter in Michigan?

Attic ventilation helps manage moisture and heat. The contractor can look at how air enters and leaves your attic.
